Quick explanation: Shock in dogs and cats

What is it?

Shock is an acute, life-threatening condition in which organs are no longer adequately supplied with blood and therefore receive too little oxygen. Without rapid treatment, vital organs can be severely damaged.

Typical signs

  • Sudden weakness, apathy, or restlessness
  • Pale or very dark mucous membranes
  • Rapid/weak pulse
  • Rapid/shallow breathing
  • Cold ears/paws, trembling, collapse

How does it happen?

Common triggers include severe blood loss, serious injuries, severe allergy (anaphylaxis), poisonings, infections (sepsis), or severe fluid loss (dehydration) (e.g., diarrhea/vomiting).

What can I do?

Inform your vet, keep your pet warm and resting calmly, avoid stress, and transport them quickly. Apply pressure if there is heavy bleeding.
