Cold and pre-existing conditions in dogs and cats –
what are the risks?

For many animals, cold is not just “unpleasant.” Cold and dry air, as well as slight hypothermia, can noticeably worsen certain pre-existing conditions.

Cold inhaled air is the strongest trigger – more dangerous than “cold weather” itself. Heart and especially lung patients are particularly at risk. Seniors, cats with CNI, and asthmatics react early and often dramatically. Subclinical deteriorations in winter, on the other hand, are often overlooked because they progress insidiously.

Table of contents

Respiratory tract – here the risk is highest

Particularly affected are:

  • Chronic Bronchitis (more common in dogs)
  • Feline asthma
  • Tracheal collapse (narrowing/instability of the windpipe in dogs)
  • Lung diseases with increased pressure in the pulmonary vessels (pulmonary hypertension)

Why does cold make it worse?
Cold air can constrict the bronchi, making mucus thicker and harder to clear. This makes breathing more difficult.

Possible consequences: more Cough, Dyspnea (labored breathing), and asthma attacks.

Cardiovascular

Particularly affected are:

  • Chronic Congestive heart failure (more common in dogs)
  • Feline heart muscle diseases (cardiomyopathies)

Why can cold be problematic?
In cold conditions, the body constricts blood vessels in the skin and extremities to conserve heat. This increases blood pressure, and the heart has to work against higher resistance.

Possible consequences: faster fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, risk of worsening heart disease. Some animals also have an increased risk of fluid accumulation in the lungs.

Musculoskeletal system (joints, spine, muscles)

Particularly affected are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spondylosis
  • and other chronic back/spinal problems

Why can Pain worsen in the cold?
Muscles tense up more easily, and synovial fluid becomes “thicker.” This can make movements stiffer and more painful.

Possible consequences: more Stiffness, Lameness, Pain – especially after rest periods.

Neurological disorders

Particularly affected are:

  • Disc problems
  • peripheral nerve diseases (e.g., in paws/legs)

Why can cold worsen conditions?
Tense back muscles can intensify Pain. Additionally, nerves react more sensitively to cold.

Possible consequences: stronger Pain, more noticeable gait, possible neurological deterioration.

Kidneys and urinary tract

Particularly affected are:

  • Chronic kidney disease (more common in cats)
  • Idiopathic Cystitis/FLUTD (cat)

Why is winter critical?
Many animals drink less in the cold. In addition, there is dry heating air. Both promote dehydration, and Stress (e.g., less movement, more indoors) can particularly strain the bladder in cats.

Possible consequences: worsening kidney values, recurrence / relapse of bladder problems.

Hormones and metabolism

Particularly affected are:

Why can cold have an influence?
In some diseases, thermoregulation works less effectively. Additionally, energy requirements and Insulin sensitivity can change.

Possible consequences: pronounced Intolerance to cold, more fluctuating blood sugar levels.

Immune system and skin

Particularly at risk are:

  • Seniors
  • Animals under immunosuppression (e.g., Cortisol, chemotherapy)
  • Animals with atopic dermatitis

Why can cold be problematic?
Mucous membranes become drier and less well supplied with blood, and the skin barrier is often weakened in winter.

Possible consequences: higher Susceptibility to infection, more Itching, slower wound healing.

Tabular summary

Cold and pre-existing conditions in dogs and cats – Overview

Organ system

Pre-existing condition

Pet Type

Problem due to cold

Why? (Mechanism)

Typical consequences

Respiratory tract

Chronic Cough (chronic bronchitis/COPD-like)

Dog > Cat

Cold inhaled air

Bronchi constrict (bronchoconstriction), mucus becomes thicker

More Cough, Dyspnea (labored breathing), exacerbations

Respiratory tract

Feline asthma (feline asthma)

Cat

Cold, dry air

Bronchi spasm (bronchospasm), Inflammation increases

Asthma attack, Dyspnea (labored breathing)

Respiratory tract

Unstable/narrow windpipe (tracheal collapse)

Dog

Cold air, urge to Cough

Mucous membrane irritated, windpipe collapses more easily (dynamic collapse)

Coughing fits

Respiratory tract

High blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension)

Dog > Cat

Cold air

Vessels constrict with low oxygen (hypoxic vasoconstriction)

Dyspnea (labored breathing), Syncope

Heart

Congestive heart failure (chronic heart insufficiency)

Dog > Cat

Cold exposure

Vessels constrict, heart pumps against more resistance (afterload increases)

Acute deterioration (decompensation), fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema)

Heart

Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)

Cat

Cold

Blood pressure rises, oxygen demand increases

Rapid exhaustion, reduced exercise tolerance (exercise intolerance)

Musculoskeletal system

joint degeneration / osteoarthritis (Osteoarthritis)

Dog = Cat

Cold, humidity

Muscles tense up, synovial fluid becomes thicker (synovial fluid)

Lameness, Pain, Stiffness

Musculoskeletal system

Spinal degeneration (Spondylosis)

Dog

Cold

Muscles tense up, mobility decreases

Pain, Stiffness

Spine

Disc problem/herniation (disc disease)

Dog > Cat

Hypothermia

Back muscles tense up (paraspinal muscle tension), pressure on nerves can increase

More Pain, possibly deficits (neurological deterioration)

Neurology
